”Warhol, Money, and ’Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century'”

This session will consider the creation and marketing of the 1980 series ”Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century” including the anti-Semitic reception in the press at the time and the embrace by Jewish collectors and institutions since. It will also discuss the exhibition ”Warhol’s Jews” which was curated by Meyer for the Jewish Museum in New York and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.

Richard Meyer is Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor in Art History at Stanford University as well as the curator of Warhol’s Jews: Ten Portraits Reconsidered. He is now writing Master of the Two Left Feet: Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered, a study of a Jewish immigrant who achieved international recognition as a self-taught painter in the 1940s. A companion exhibition, Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered, opens at the American Folk Art Museum (New York) in September 2022.
