Miglė Anušauskaitė

The hidden autobiographies of Vilna.

Meet Miglė Anušauskaitė, a researcher from the National Library of Lithuania, in conversation about the unique documents, thought to have been lost during the Holocaust, and rediscovered in 2017. Among the Yiddish documents are the autobiographies of Jewish youth, submitted to the YIVO autobiography contests of 1932, ’34 and ’39, varying from the prosaic to the poetic, touching upon everyday life, conflicts with religious parents, experiences of first love and many other topics.

Miglė Anušauskaitė is a comics artist and a researcher at the Judaica Research Centre of the National Library of Lithuania. She has been working with Yiddish documents since 2017, with a focus on the autobiographies of Jewish youth from the Interwar period. Miglė has also authored some small comic books about Jewish history and culture, as well as many one-page comics about the various Yiddish summer programs she has been attending regularly and has possibly developed a certain addiction to.
