Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and Argument for the Sake of Heaven: The “sacred art” of debate

With social media, polarization, and incivility, how are we to engage in structured, reasoned, and respectful discourse with the “other”? We approach the question by exploring the paradigmatic debate between Hillel and Shammai. We will consider relevant commentary from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks ”Restoring the Good in Divided Times” (2020). Following his thought, we will also consider an example that suggests something of a contrast: Numbers 16:3 and the “infamous” episode of Korach and his followers.
